Compass West Outfitters offers the finest guided elk hunting New Mexico has to offer. We specialize in both hunts drawn through the NM Big Game Draw as well as guaranteed tag hunts on both public or private land. Unlike other states, the New Mexico Big Game draw offers no points system, it is a pure lottery every year, so everyone is on the same playing field. But the only way to draw your dream tag is to apply. Don't miss out - call us today and sign up for our free application service. Quit dreaming and step into the very best hunts in the west!. We will work with you to choose the best hunt to match your physical level, expectations as well as trophy potential. We also welcome hunters who have drawn tags on their own in the draw and are looking to find a quality outfitter for their hunt of a lifetime! New Mexico also has youth only opportunities as well as hunts for mobility impaired hunters.
Trophy Guided Elk Hunting in the Lincoln National Forest, New Mexico
Unit 34, Unit 36 and Unit 37
We offer guided New Mexico Elk hunts in the Lincoln National Forest (unit 34, unit 36 and unit 37). These units have one of the largest elk populations in the state. We start with bow seasons, leading into youth only, followed by Muzzleloader and rifle seasons. We also lease private lands in this area, allowing us to hunt through January each year. Our guides literally have boots on the ground actively hunting in this area from Sept 1st to January 31st. Our New Mexico elk hunting guides practically know the elk by name and for sure by the sound of a bugle before the season is over! We have enjoyed an astoundingly high harvest rate on bulls in the 285-340 class with many of our hunters having taken 350+ bulls. We will also harvest several bulls over 370 every year in these units. Hunts are glass and stalk or calling, mixed with a little waterhole hunting amongst the ponderosa, pinion and junipers of the area. We hunt from 6,000-10,000 foot elevations here. Over all, these hunts have good draw odds as well as high harvest rates. There are a good numbers of landowner tags for this unit as well, allowing you to plan a hunt with no draw.
Trophy GuidedElk Hunting in the Gila National Forest, New Mexico
Unit 16A, Unit 16D, Unit 16C, Unit 15, Unit 17, Unit 13, Unit 12
The Gila hunts are some of the best elk hunts in the world, but they are also some of the hardest to draw in the state of New Mexico. However, you're never going to get to hunt this incredible area unless you apply. The beautiful Gila National Forest areas of New Mexico are a mix of open cedar, juniper flats and ponderosa pine forest. In these areas, we specialize in trophy guided elk hunts here in New Mexico with a bow or muzzleloader but love the chance to provide rifle hunters the opportunity to go looking for monster bulls that avoided getting close enough during the bow seasons! Most of the bulls that we take in this area are 300-330 and you will likely have the opportunity to both see and harvest bulls in the 340-350+ range.
Opportunity hunts in New Mexico for elk
We offer a number of elk hunts that are nice hunts with good draw odds, in fact, some of the best draw odds in the state. You can also get landowner tags for a reasonable rate in these areas if you miss out on the draw. Opportunity elk hunts are good hunts for 250-290 bulls much like hunting in Colorado. Most are very nice 5x5-6x6 but we have killed some bulls in the 340+ range in these units over the last few years. We can see good numbers of animals each season and have good chance percentages on nice bulls. Success rates are very high and opportunity to shoot at a legal bull has been 100% since 2010. We access the area with 4 x 4 trucks and a mix of glassing and walk hunting with some sitting on water holes and calling on early hunts. This hunt is as hard as you want to make it. We can hike big hills and glass but for the most part we can get about every place we need to with the trucks. For hunters that are not in top shape we have a few hunts in this category we should talk about!

What to Expect on Guided Days
You are here to hunt and we keep that in mind - most guided days are FULL days. We are more than willing to meet your needs and adjust to whatever schedule you would like to keep but the guides treat every hunt like a once in a lifetime hunt. On many of the rut hunts for bulls, the best plan is to hunt from before light until they stop talking, then take a long break in the field glass all afternoon or return to camp, then head back out about 2-3 in the afternoon and hunt until dark. Days start before dawn - you and your guide will be heading to the best looking area for your hunt. Once there you'll take advantage of the guides skills to call in or glass up your elk.

Specializing in glass and stalk trophy mule deer hunts
New Mexico has long been known for its huge elk and monster mule deer. We specialize in New Mexico mule deer units that offer the best chance at the mule deer of a lifetime. Many of the mule deer taken on our guided hunts in unit 2A, 2B, 2C and 7 are over 25" and the chance at a 30" buck is always there. In fact, the county that we guide in New Mexico is #1 for B&C mule deer entries and where we guide in Colorado is #6. You will enjoy mule deer hunting in New Mexico in the high mesa country with a mix of pinion, juniper and large sage flats broken up by sandstone valleys and seemingly endless country made for glassing with guides that specialize in trophy mule deer hunting.
New Mexico Unit 2B mule deer hunts will have us into well over 50 deer a day and as many as a 100 per day on the late hunts if you have snow in Colorado, with about a 150 inch average on dry late winter years and as high as 180 inches in 2B on premium weather years. 2B is not a trophy unit, but it is still a good hunt. Unit 2C is a trophy unit with low draw odds but great genetics and for sure some monsters, in fact we average over 190" on our 2C rifle hunts. Unit 2A guided hunts offer very high draw odds as well as some true monsters. Guided hunts in unit 7 offer high draw odds in a huge unit with very few tags. I have over the last 4 years gained an extensive understanding of where the deer live in this unit and offer only 1 or 2 hunters the chance each year to hunt with us here; bucks are in the 170-200 inches as an average but there is not a huge number of deer here, just a few stealthy monsters!
Any unit 2 or unit 7 guided mule deer hunt offers what is simply the very finest mule deer hunting in the state. Do not miss your chance to hunt the premier mule deer units in the state with its top outfitting team! All the units that we guide offer a good chance at a book buck - please feel free to call me anytime to talk about your best choice of guided mule deer hunts in unit 2A, unit 2B, unit 2C and unit 7. We book up early so dont wait; call us today to lock in your spot!
We also guide on private land in unit 30 and 34 in SE New Mexico. There is no draw for this hunt offering you a great chance to use this hunt as a backup to the draws in unit 2. These hunts are on a 40,000 acre ranch that we lease for elk and deer hunting. Deer are in the 130-150 class or 8-10 points, the average that we strive for through management.
